Hi Everyone!

I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while. I have been settling in to the new semester and new schedule. I am having a fantastic time in Mrs. Lovejoy's classroom with all of your children! I recently started a lesson with them on classification. It's turning out to be bigger than I thought, but the kids are having a great time with it. Since it is my intro lesson, and since I know many of them already, I wanted to dig a little deeper than just the basics (which is what I would normally do, stepping into a totally new environment). The students are learning that living organisms are classified into "groups" using the scientific classification system. They learned a saying to help them remember all the parts. Kings Play Cards On Fat Green Stools. Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. Our Kingdom is Mrs. Lovejoy's class, our Phylums are males and females, and so on. The kids are choosing the specific characteristics they will use to group everyone, and later they will be coming up with creative names for them. They are loving it!
You might have noticed your children coming home with minty breath the last coupe days . . . . . This is because I have been rewarding excellent behavior with mints. They have al earned at least one by now. They have also been earning points as a class. Mrs. Lovejoy has been out for the past two days, and they have been really awesome for me. My supervisor came today to observe my science lesson, and couldn't get over how well behaved they were.
I am going to get better about writing more frequent posts, I promise! Remember, I love getting comments, from the parents and students!

Sincerely,

Mr. Drown

Letter and Questions!

Please use the comment function to answer the following questions! There are 4 questions for the students and one for the parents/guardians.

These comments will be sent to me and I will keep them private, they will not be published on this post!

1.   What are your hobbies, activities, and interests?

2.   What do you want to be/do when you grow up and why?

3.   Tell me something about YOU that makes you special, unique, or interesting!

4.   Is there anything else you want me to know?

***Parent Question***
Please write me a paragraph or two telling me about your child. Please include things that wouldn't necessarily be obvious to me by observing them in class, or important/unique things you think I should know, or want me to know, as an adult working with your child.

Thanks!!

Welcome to Mr. Drown's Blog

Hello Parents and Students,

I wanted to take the opportunity to officially introduce myself, and let you all know how excited I am to be working in Mrs. Lovejoy's classroom for the next few months. I decided to use this blog to do that, as I will be using it throughout my time here as a tool for interacting with students and parents. I thought this would be a great way for everyone to familiarize themselves with the blog.
I grew up attending M.S.A.D. #60 schools, and graduated from Noble in 2003. In 2007 I graduated from USM with a BA in Communication. It was quite the feat for me after transferring several times and trying out several majors.
I am currently in my second semester of grad school. I am in a one year program through the University of Southern Maine called ETEP. It is a program for graduates with non-teaching degrees to earn their teaching certification and work towards their masters in teaching. I spent the Fall semester in a 5th grade classroom at York Middle School. I really enjoyed the placement and learned a lot, and hope to practice a lot of what I learned while I am here at the Hurd School. The program is pretty intense and keeps me really busy.
I love teaching! I have substitute taught for several years, taught swim lessons, music lessons, horseback riding lessons, and coached youth soccer. I've facilitated after school activities like homework groups and drama clubs as well. It has all been a major part of my life since I graduated high school.
In my personal life my favorite things to do are skiing in the winter and training and showing miniature horses throughout the Spring, Summer, and Fall. I have twice competed at the American Miniature Horse World Championship Show in Texas. I'm also a musician and play my saxophone when I have time.
The intensity of this program has kept me from working this year, although I do have a few students that I tutor or teach saxophone lessons to. Before this program, I worked as a substitute teacher, food server, and spent several summers working at recreation camps.
I look forward to working with all the students and meeting all the parents. Please comment on this post so that I know you and your child have read it. Please sign it with both your own and your child's name. Feel free to comment on future blog posts or contact me via email at mrdrown@gmail.com or by phone, (603) 978 7507.

Sincerely,

Mr. Drown
