Hi Everyone!
I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while. I have been settling in to the new semester and new schedule. I am having a fantastic time in Mrs. Lovejoy's classroom with all of your children! I recently started a lesson with them on classification. It's turning out to be bigger than I thought, but the kids are having a great time with it. Since it is my intro lesson, and since I know many of them already, I wanted to dig a little deeper than just the basics (which is what I would normally do, stepping into a totally new environment). The students are learning that living organisms are classified into "groups" using the scientific classification system. They learned a saying to help them remember all the parts. Kings Play Cards On Fat Green Stools. Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species. Our Kingdom is Mrs. Lovejoy's class, our Phylums are males and females, and so on. The kids are choosing the specific characteristics they will use to group everyone, and later they will be coming up with creative names for them. They are loving it!
You might have noticed your children coming home with minty breath the last coupe days . . . . . This is because I have been rewarding excellent behavior with mints. They have al earned at least one by now. They have also been earning points as a class. Mrs. Lovejoy has been out for the past two days, and they have been really awesome for me. My supervisor came today to observe my science lesson, and couldn't get over how well behaved they were.
I am going to get better about writing more frequent posts, I promise! Remember, I love getting comments, from the parents and students!
Sincerely,
Mr. Drown
